Untitled, by Victoria V. Brown, published in Kalliope 2015

Kalliope, Penn State’s undergraduate literary magazine, is sponsored by the Penn State English Department. The name “Kalliope” is derived from the Greek muse of epic poetry. As one of the nine muses of the arts and sciences, “Kalliope” was called on by early Greek writers and artists for inspiration.

The magazine is produced by a student staff and is supervised by faculty advisor Bradley Markle. The purpose of Kalliope is to further the ideals of free and open literary expression by establishing a writing community.  It also provides a literary outlet through the publication of student work, public readings, and lectures.

Kalliope includes works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. Submissions open at the end of October and close at the end of January. The selection process occurs during February. This period is followed by the copy editing process, in which staff proofreads all selected pieces, and the production process, in which staff designs and assembles the magazine. The resulting publication is printed and distributed before the end of the academic year.

In the fall, we produce the smaller publication Folio. Folio submissions open on the first day of fall classes and close at the end of October. The selection process occurs in the beginning of November followed by the copy editing and production processes. The publication is printed and distributed in the beginning of the spring semester.
